When are and your family are asleep in your beds at night, you want to know that everything is as safe and secure as it can be. You want to be able to rest easy knowing that if there were to be any kind of problem during the night that you will be ready for it. Making your home as safe and secure as possible for everyone that lives there should be your top priority and only requires a few specific items to help you make sure you have done all you can.

If you have never experienced a house fire, it can be frightening at any time, but during the night while everyone is sleeping is the scariest of all. To be awakened by a blaring fire alarm or smoke detector can be disorienting and you must make sure everyone knows what to do ahead of time in the event of a fire no matter what time it is day or night. Check your smoke alarm batteries frequently to make sure they are always working and ready.

If any doors are blocked by fire, it is important that every upstairs room has an escape ladder. Even kids need to be taught how to put an escape ladder in place in the open window and how to climb down to safety. Of course, this will be impossible for very small children, so it will be up to you to be able to get to them as quickly as possible in the event of a house fire. Just by supplying a safety ladder for every bedroom in the home, you could save lives that are precious to you.

Some people know the terror of having an intruder break into their home. It is bad enough if your not at home, but if you are at home it can be terrifying to know there is a stranger in your house during the night. Protect your valuables by keeping them in a hidden locked box or fire safe chest. This way they will be safe from burglars and fire. Having it be waterproof is not a bad idea either. Some people think it is a good idea to keep an handgun in the home just in case they need it, but when you have children, you should keep it in a locked wall pistol cabinet. It is the safest place for a handgun.

Last of all, it is a good idea to have some kind of home security system installed. It does not really have to be an expensive or an elaborate system, just enough so that you will be alerted if someone is trying to break in. Taking as many safety and security measures as you can is not overkill, it is just common sense and you can never do enough to protect your family and your home when they are your most valuable possessions.
